I’m finally home from a long season of travel, and from a long stay in New York… two weeks is plenty long and boy was I missing my own bed and all my little ones! Along with being lavished with hugs and kisses, sorting piles of laundry and cuddling for a while in our cozy big bed together as a family while the kids passed out on us (you know all the normal things after being away for a while), I also totally missed my kitchen. Now, I can’t say that I was craving a cooking session or anything like that, but a stocked fridge, which was one of my top priorities on my first day back home yesterday, and my blender were calling my name! Though I ate a plethora of salads and fresh foods, along with all of the other deliciously decadent finds, I was still craving something FRESH. I had smoothie on my mind.
Getting back into the groove and stocking my fridge with fresh ingredients was the first step. Our kids absolutely follow our lead and I have to say, my two littlest ones were happy picking out fruits and veggies with me at the grocery store. When we have fresh, colorful choices on hand, they love to create a rainbow on their plate to snack on. Brayden, my seven-year-old, is especially particular about this and will spend so much time cutting, slicing, and chopping to bring to life whatever his inventive mind imagines. On the other end of the spectrum, I also notice that when our kitchen stock is low and fresh ingredients are nowhere to be found in the house, we all turn to processed, sugary, starchy finds as our go-to, craving fix.
In an effort to bring fresh back to our kitchen and our morning routine (and especially since I don’t have big travel plans on the near horizon… it’s house reno time baby!), we set ourselves up for the next few weeks for some major smoothie making success by filling up the refrigerator with produce!
The great thing with smoothies is that you can tailor to any dietary need!! For my kids, I want to infuse their diets with vegetables, fruit, some added fats like coconut oil and other nutritious boosts like bee pollen, chia or hemp seeds, etc. This way, I can deliver the nutrients they need in a form they love, PLUS they get to help create each recipe by picking many of their own ingredients! We put together a little Morning Smoothie Makeover menu and each day they go through and choose the ingredients and flavors they want added. It’s quite fun to see what they come up with and we can experiment a little too.
Want to print our Morning Smoothie Makeover menu and use it in your own house too?
Just download it here! I recommend printing a few to mark up OR just print one and laminate it for continued use in the kitchen. Then you can even use a dry-erase marker for kids to circle their chosen ingredients, write the date or name your smoothie. Either way, just have fun with it.
And again, tailor it to your needs. Dairy free? No problem, there are PLENTY of options with coconut milk, almond milk, and more. On Keto? You’re covered there as well and there are still many items you can use, like avocado, heavy whipping cream, coconut milk, almond milk, stevia, coconut oil, matcha green tea powder, vanilla (I’ve even got a link with loads of Keto smoothie recipes here). Paleo? It’s all good!
