I’m sharing a fun way to create oatmeal hower bags that you can take right into the shower with you or use in a DIY beauty gift for the amazing skin benefits oatmeal provides! This is a skin-healthy gift as part of a sponsored conversation for Socialstars #Aveeno.
Though we’re experiencing a sort of heat wave across the country, I’m sure it won’t last, and as the temperatures drop our skin needs a little extra TLC. Thankfully, much of what our skin needs we can find in our kitchen, and specifically in a breakfast bowl… at least from what was in mine this morning. Oatmeal can pack a really big punch in skin care.
Just a little reading can show that oatmeal has anti-inflammatory properties and is perfect for most skin types, even the most sensitive skin. While it’s moisturizing and helps remove dead skin cells it also contains saponins, a cleansing agent, and can even be used as a mild soap. And I don’t know about you, but I’ve treated myself and my kids to many an oatmeal shower or bath to help soothe irritated skin, as it can also help treat eczema, rosacea and rashes. So when our skin gets on the dry, itchy side, it’s time to infuse a little oatmeal into our skin’s life.
DIY OATMEAL SHOWER BAGS
While we’re in this gifting season, it would be a simple way to give a little gift of pampering to someone you love as well! You could whip up a body scrub and some oatmeal shower bags right in your kitchen and put it together as a winter body care package. This is why a small bag is so practical… we can’t always take the time and it’s not the most economical solution to fill a tub with oats and water. But we can just fill a small bag with a handful of oats and a few drops of essential oil, and we’ve got the exfoliating and moisturizing benefits of an oatmeal bath, without the bath.
With mine, I just add a drop of Aveeno® Skin Relief Gentle Scents Wash to the bag when I’m in the shower, so it would be a great addition to your gifting package as well. You know I’ve talked about this brand before and have used it for years on myself and my kids. This soap free wash is also infused with soothing oatmeal and is as gentle on sensitive skin as fragrance-free products, but with the gentle scent of coconut cream… which is one of my favorite scents! And there are so many essential oils that pair perfectly with it, I can adjust to what mood I’m in at the time. If you don’t want to add a gentle wash in the shower, you could always grate a little bar soap to add to the oatmeal bags so they’ll lather with just a bit of water.
When wrapping up your gift, add in a few extras like a hand painted votive or two to personalize the present even more and add that extra special touch, both to the gift and to the recipients pampering day.
To make the oatmeal shower bags:
Mix 2 cups rolled oats, 10-15 drops of oil and about 1/2 bar of grated soap (if that’s the soap option you choose) in a bowl. You could also add in dried herbs (lavender would be a nice touch). Scoop mixture into small bags until about 3/4 of the way full and tie off in a knot.
Keep a couple of bags hanging in the shower for you (like I do!) and wrap some up with the rest of your gift items to create a moisturizing and skin softening pamper package this season!

I love oatmeal baths. My son has eczema so we do one every week. These look great. Will have to try it out.

Love this idea! I always think an oatmeal bath is wonderful, but so messy! About how much do you put in a bag? (how many bags does the 2 cup recipe make?)
Tabitha Blue says
Thanks Erin! I just filled the bags about 3/4 of the way full. I believe I made between 4-6 bags from this recipe! 🙂 Definitely a cleaner way to use it!

Sounds yummy! What is the dark granular stuff in the spoon in the first photo? Almost looks like coffee grounds. 🙂
Tabitha Blue says
It is!!! It’s a coffee scrub! The stuff is awesome 😉 We have a recipe on the blog for it too, just search for coffee scrub.

Once the bath bombs have dried for 24 hours in the mold, carefully remove them and allow them to air dry undisturbed for another 24 hours.
