You guys, on my last trip (who knows maybe it was the cross-country travel with four kids) I found a few gray hairs. As in GRAY hair. And not just one… there were a few. Okay, maybe I only plucked three, but still. It was enough for me to want to do something about it, because I’m certain there were more that I just didn’t see. As a busy mom of four, I don’t typically have time to get into a salon (I think my last salon appointment was WELL before Aria was born!), but I can still get the look with full and shiny hair, even between helping my kids brush their teeth, pouring coffee and making lunches!
After finding those gray hairs, and choosing not to cry about it, I decided to try hair color at home FOR THE FIRST TIME. Yep, it was my first time with hair color out of the box! I’ve used washes that infuse a little color before, but a full on, out of the box permanent and intense color was a first for me.

I’m glad I did! I decided to pick up Schwarzkopf Keratin Color Hair Coloring Kit, 4.6 Intense Cocoa at Walmart for it’s 100% gray hair coverage and less hair breakage, plus there’s a pre-treatment… and anything with the word treatment in it makes me feel like I’m “treating” my hair to something good. I definitely had easy results and quality hair color at home with color results that so far are lasting well! Plus, I was able to fit it all in between snack time!! 🙂 I went from a grown-out color combo that wasn’t great for my current skin tone to a darker, more vibrant looking color.
As I mentioned, it starts with a pretreatment, but before beginning even that, I recommend brushing through your hair, wearing clothing you don’t mind staining and covering up with a towel you can stain as well… ’cause the stains just happen. Then, glove up and begin! The pre treatment is super simple, just rub through hair like you’re using conditioner.
Each step is numbered, so it’s easy to follow along, even when distracted by little ones around your feet. After the pre treatment (number 1), it’s time to mix the color and activator, both numbered with a 2. Apply evenly to hair, wrap up and let set while you cut up snacks and have tickle fights.
I just waited the instructed 25 minutes before rinsing and applying the conditioner (step 3). Then it was rinse, dry and back to mom life! No more gray hair and it all happened without waiting at the salon.

Have you colored your hair at home before? Have you covered gray hair or other damage? What kind of results did you have?
It’s easy to pick up a color on your next run through Walmart! Groceries, toilet paper and hair color, all in one trip, haha! #MomLife for real.
