My eyes are beginning to twitch their way closed. These last few days have quite literally felt like a storm blew through and carried me on it’s bucking tailwind, from an unexpected call to fly out of town for work to returning to a fevered little babe and a mountain of work I left piled not so neatly as I flung a suitcase onto my bed to fill with a couple of necessities… pajamas and my trusty breast pump, because my nursing babe couldn’t accompany me on a trip with such short notice. And as my plane returned to our snowy runway, my second reaction was to wince at the cold I knew was facing me from the other side of the window. Though my first reaction, the LOVE of being home trumped even the bitter cold. It may be icy and frigid, beautifully white and painfully windy, bundling weather only, but it’s home and home is good.
I realize that I said it perfectly just a couple of months ago upon a return home, and my heart echos this exact tune tonight…
Everyone is snuggled soundly in their own beds. And I can’t get over how good it feels to say that. Our OWN BEDS. Not to say that by morning a couple of sleepy eyed, bed headed littles won’t be pretzeled into the big bed. But, oh how I’ve missed my bed, the pillow-topped haven that’s learned to hug and hold our bodies perfectly tucked between crisp, clean sheets. And the icing on the already it-feels-good-to-be-here cake… the welcoming scents of the best Christmas-y oils being diffused throughout the house upon my arrival.
And okay, so maybe not the Christmas-y oils this time around, but I did light a few candles upon my return, as well as bounce a mostly-happy-with-a-few-achy-cries baby on my hip as my big girl made herself a PB&J. I was in awe.
Kids grow up too fast, their beauty sprouts as their tender babyhood passes, they learn how to push your buttons and then massage their way right back into the very beat of your heart. Their footsteps fill home with beautiful melodies, the ones I miss while away. There’s nothing like home and home is good.
