Writing is huge in our house. As in, Aliyah always wants a pen and paper. As in, I always need to have paper and writing utensils handy. As in, she likes to make lists (something she just may have learned from her mother). As in, she wants to write cards and notes to people and wants them to know it was from her… and so, her name goes on everything.
My girl can write her name well, and does it all on her own. Only sometimes now does she leave out the ‘I’ or the second ‘A’ in her name. We have pretty lofty goals in our house though, and decided it might be important to spell our names with all the letters. So these nifty little cards came in handy. I just printed each letter of her name, first and last, cut them out and laminated them.
If you didn’t have access to a printer and/or laminator, you could do the same by writing letters on cardstock or index cards.
Now, she has fun sitting down to a pile of letters and sorting them out to spell her name.
And if she happens to miss a letter, it’ll be sitting right there in front of her on the table as a reminder.
Although, she hasn’t missed a letter while doing it this way.
To make this a little more challenging, she decided to flip the cards upside-down, and then turn them over one-at-a-time and put them in order.
She had to think a little harder this way.
And sometimes, when we’re done, we’ll see what other words we can come up with by using the same letters.
Hey, it works for us.

That’s great to see her love of words and language. Looks like she’ll be a creative writer someday soon 🙂

This is an awesome idea! Avery does not really like to write and spell. She can write her name, but her writing isn’t that great. Maybe this is something I can do to encourage her to spell and write! Thanks!

What a great idea. I think I’ll go and do this for OJ. I know for certain that teaching him to read and write is going to be MUCH harder than TO…based on personality. I can’t wait to keep going through your old posts to see your baby boy. I’m so behind! Happy Sunday.
