“I’m setting up a photoshoot, Mommy!” She breathed the words out through a veil of determination and excitement. Chairs were set in place and every scrap of white material she could find was draped just so, pillows fluffed and blankets layered until she stood back and nodded her affirmation.
Brayden was the first guinea pig and I was handed the camera. “You first,” she said and so I clicked.
It amazes me, really. Their bond, their connection. I watch and as I do, I learn. Sometimes I try and look for that bit of woman that’s in my girl, my firstborn. As she grows I see the signs of who she is, and who she’s going to be. I see her as a young woman, a mature woman, a mama. I see her nurture her brother, directing him, praising him. I observe her carefully holding her baby dolls, catch her painting their “nails” a pretty pink and helping her strap a bag on to her bike so she can take them to the park… always letting them enjoy the big slide first.
And this shoot? Well it was all her, her ideas, her preparation… her direction.
They are growing. And for right now, I’ll love the little glimpses of babyhood that I get to see, because the more I look, the more I realize… they’re not babies anymore.
