I smile into the screen like a piece of me is on the other side. And it is. The faces of my baby loves smile back at me, talking and carrying on… almost close enough to feel the delicate skin of their rosy cheeks, almost close enough to smell the scent of their hair that’s been kissed by the sun and salty gulf air. And yet, they’re still so far away.
As Brayden teeters between the excited “Hi mommy!!” that he interjects into the conversation at random moments, smiling with his bright blue oceans and a wide, tooth filled grin and totters back with a sad lips turned upside down, I decide to brighten his mood with a question.
“Are you going to ride to the airport on Monday to pick Mommy up?” I ask with a hopeful smile drenched in enthusiasm, waiting for an equally enthusiastic reply since he usually rises to the occasion and lets his spirit soar even higher than mine can go.
“No.” The matter-of-fact reply comes back like a sucker punch to the gut. I wasn’t ready, I didn’t guard. Defense, where was my defense?
As I let the emotion of his answer sink in and slowly, mentally, unravel the knots made from my own, he follows up with a delayed, “I come on Saturday and get you.”
Tensions melted with the realization that my littlest love just wanted his mommy home soon. With a crooked smile I was about to let him down easily with the fact that I indeed arrive home on Monday and then Aliyah chimed in with a sing song voice and head tipped back, “Awkward…”
They make me laugh. In fact, I’m still laughing at the response of my five year old and her perfect timing.
Another cute, laughable, adorable and down right making-mama-miss-these-faces moment I captured in the car with my phone before I left…

Love it!!!! Ethan says that all the time too, and it’s hilarious how they get the timing spot on sometimes. Amazing what they can pick up from a little Rio 😉
