If you’re planning a fall family trip to the Smoky Mountains, here’s why Dollywood’s Harvest Festival deserves a spot on your itinerary, including the food we loved, our kids’ favorite rides, and why you absolutely need to stay until after dark.

This visit was hosted by Dollywood. All opinions and experiences are our own. #dollywoodpartner
Seven years ago, I visited Dollywood while pregnant with our twins. We were there filming with Southern Living for the opening of Wildwood Grove, and I remember thinking what an incredible place it was to bring kids.

Fast-forward to this fall, and those babies are now SEVEN. And this time, they got to experience the park themselves!
We spent the day at Dollywood during the Harvest Festival, and between the roller coasters, fall treats, pumpkins, and nighttime lights, I think it’s safe to say the kids loved every minute of it.
And honestly? So did we.
The Smoky Mountain Christmas Festival at Dollywood starts November 6th!

Why Visit Dollywood During the Harvest Festival?
We love a good fall family trip, and Dollywood in the Smoky Mountains makes it feel like fall in all the best ways.
Everywhere you turn, there are pumpkins, colorful decorations, seasonal food, live entertainment, and so much to explore.

Dollywood’s Harvest Festival runs September 14 through October 31, 2026, and the festival is included with regular park admission.
During the day, you can enjoy the rides, shows, and fall food. But after dark, the park transforms into Great Pumpkin LumiNights, with thousands of glowing pumpkins and illuminated displays.
My advice? Plan to spend the entire day because you really don’t want to miss the nighttime experience.

Our Kids’ Favorite Dollywood Rides
With kids ranging from elementary school to teenagers, finding something everyone loves can be a challenge. But Dollywood has such a great mix of family-friendly attractions and bigger thrills.
This visit was ALL about the roller coasters!

Mystery Mine
The twins loved the mine-themed roller coaster! Seeing them old enough to experience rides like this was such a fun moment, especially remembering our first visit when they weren’t even born yet.
Lightning Rod
Aria’s favorite was Lightning Rod! If you have thrill-seekers in your family, this is definitely one to put on your list.
Thunderhead
Another big favorite was Thunderhead, the wooden roller coaster in Timber Canyon. The kids had so much fun with this one!
One of the things I appreciate about Dollywood is that there are rides for so many different ages and comfort levels. You can split up for bigger thrills or find attractions the family can enjoy together.
Family tip: Check the height requirements before your visit, especially if you have younger kids. Dollywood also has a ride accessibility and height guide on its website.

So Many Rides, So Little Time!
We spent the entire day at the park, and even with everyone going from ride to ride, we didn’t come close to experiencing everything!
Between the roller coasters, family rides, shows, seasonal food, and all the fall activities, you could easily fill more than one day here.

And speaking of filling a day… I ended up with around 20,000 steps on my watch! If you’ve been to Dollywood, you know those hills are no joke. 😂 We were definitely tired by the end of the night, but the kids had so much fun that nobody wanted to leave.
If you’re planning a visit, I’d recommend making a short list of your must-do rides, but leaving plenty of time to explore. And if your schedule allows for two days, I can absolutely see the benefit, especially when you’re visiting during a festival.
What We Ate at Dollywood’s Harvest Festival
Okay, can we talk about the FOOD?!
One of the things I was most excited about was trying the Harvest Festival Tasting Pass. It lets you sample five festival food items, which is such a fun way to try different flavors throughout the park.
We had two passes for our family, and sharing everything meant we could taste a little of so many things.
Here’s what we tried!

BBQ Chicken Sweet Potato Fries
We ordered these TWICE.
That probably tells you everything you need to know. 😂
They’re topped with smoked BBQ chicken, ranch dressing, BBQ sauce, scallions, and a smoked paprika cheese sauce.
Such a good combination of sweet and savory, and definitely one of our favorites from the day.

Spiced Corn Dip
Another savory favorite! This warm dip combines corn, peppers, spices, and queso blanco cheese.
It’s a great option if you’re looking for something to share between rides.
Hot Honey Chicken Pizza
Hot honey on pizza? Yes, please.
This seasonal pizza combines chicken, mozzarella, parmesan, and a hot honey drizzle.
It’s a fun twist on traditional theme park pizza, and we loved getting to try something different.

Harvest Funnel Cake
You can’t have a theme park day without something sweet!
The Harvest Funnel Cake brings all those fall flavors together with warm spices, caramel sauce, and powdered sugar.

Pumpkin Cookies and Whoopie Pie
Of course, we had to try some pumpkin treats too!
We sampled a pumpkin sugar cookie and a whoopie pie, which were perfect little fall desserts to share.
Dollywood’s Famous Cinnamon Bread
And no Dollywood visit is complete without cinnamon bread.
We loved it on our first visit, and we absolutely had to get it again.
If you’ve never tried the cinnamon bread from The Grist Mill, put it on your list. Warm, sweet, and covered in cinnamon goodness, it’s one of those Dollywood traditions that deserves all the attention it gets.

Great Pumpkin LumiNights: Why You Need to Stay After Dark
If there’s one thing I would tell anyone planning a fall visit to Dollywood, it’s this:
Do not leave before the sun goes down!
The park is beautiful during the day, but after dark it becomes an entirely different experience.

Great Pumpkin LumiNights fills the park with glowing pumpkins, incredible illuminated displays, and so many fun little details.
We walked around taking everything in, and the kids loved the nighttime dance party!
There was music, dancing, and just such a fun energy throughout the park.

After a full day of rides and food, it was the perfect way to end our visit.
And the lights? SO good.
It’s one of those experiences that feels special for little kids, teenagers, and parents too.

Tips for Visiting Dollywood With Kids in the Fall
If you’re planning your own family visit, here are a few things I’d recommend:
- Arrive early and stay late. There’s so much to experience, and Great Pumpkin LumiNights is worth planning your evening around.
- Consider a Harvest Festival Tasting Pass. It’s a fun way to sample multiple seasonal dishes, especially if your family likes sharing.
- Check ride height requirements in advance. It’ll help you figure out which rides your younger kids can enjoy.
- Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be doing plenty of walking throughout the day.
- Leave time for the fall decorations. Don’t rush from one ride to another without stopping to enjoy the atmosphere.
- Make room for cinnamon bread. Trust me on this one.

Remembering Dolly Parton and a Very Special Full-Circle Moment
This visit felt especially meaningful following Dolly Parton’s passing in August.
Dollywood now has a memorial where guests can pause and remember her, and we also spent time exploring The Dolly Parton Experience, which celebrates her life, music, family, and incredible legacy.
But there was one part that was especially special for us.
Lennon, Quinn, and I got to walk through Dolly’s tour bus, where she lived while traveling and spending time at the park.

And here’s a fun little piece of our family history…
When we visited Dollywood for the Wildwood Grove opening in 2019, we actually got to MEET Dolly! Our older kids were even part of an interview with her, and she was staying in that very tour bus during our visit.
So getting to walk through it seven years later, this time with the twins who were still in my belly when we met her, was such a cool experience.
I love that we have those memories from our first visit, and now we have these new ones too.
There’s something really beautiful about seeing how Dolly’s love for family, music, and bringing people together continues to be part of the park. And I’m so glad we got to experience that with our kids.

A Full-Circle Dollywood Family Memory
I think one of my favorite things about traveling with our kids is getting to return to places we’ve loved and experience them in completely new ways.
Seven years ago, we were exploring Dollywood with little ones in tow and two more on the way. This time, those babies were seven years old, riding roller coasters, picking their favorite treats, and dancing under the lights.

And while so much has changed for our family, there was something really sweet about coming back to a place that holds so many memories for us.
We came for the fall fun, and we definitely got plenty of it. But getting to make a whole new set of memories together was my favorite part.

And yes, the kids are already asking when we can go back. 😂
If you’re planning a fall trip to the Smoky Mountains, put Dollywood’s Harvest Festival on your list. Just wear comfortable shoes, come hungry, and plan to stay until after dark!
