I sit, my littles sleeping soundly to the background of the perfect, if not a little heavy, afternoon thunderstorm. Though it’s over 90 degrees outside, I’ve got a heating pad held tight under my arm, trying to get it nestled as closely as possible to my chest, it’s heat working hard to ward off a case of mastitis. It will work. It has to work, for what I’ve heard of mastitis… well, let’s just say, OWW.
But really, that’s not what this post is about. This post is about dessert. No matter how loud the thunder or how incredulously heavy the rain pours, my mind is swept up in a swirl of sweet thoughts.
Beginning with last weekends all American hullabaloo. And if the calendar of life were laid out as one giant spectacular cake, then to me, holidays would be the largest piles of brightly colored frosting. The ones formed into perfect gigantic flowers. They are the sweet toppings of life. The days we long for and love to celebrate, the types of days we can’t dare consume too much of before we double over from belly aches arising from too much goodness.
And our Fourth failed to disappoint. It was the perfect heaping of red, white and blue sugar coated frosting.
Our Saturday morning began with a bang as we marched up and down the streets of our little city with friends and family, our church, arms full of candy for all the littles along the way, smiling as they clamored over each other to gather as much candy as little hands can carry. And my littles? The were great sports, Brayden riding on his daddy’s chest, a proud American, and the hit of the parade (only saying this because of the “oooo’s” and “ahhhh’s” we heard along the way), and my girl, my little social butterfly, making friends and giving out candy like a rockstar, at least part of the way.
My brother Jeremy, the life of the party, always jumping in snapshots. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
After we inspected a few of the floats, and large good ole’ American tractors up close, it didn’t take long before daddy’s rhythmic march lulled this little sweaty, sleepy boy into a deep slumber.
And as the afternoon brought with it a few more digits to add to the already soaring temperatures, we quickly made our way home to greet more friends and laze around the air conditioned house watching movies, eating our fair share of red, white and blue goodies and smores-pops and taking long dips in the pool.
And though Saturday brought with it heavy eyelids quite early, Sunday made up for it with more playing, more swimming and more loving on our own lil’ miss cutie pie.
And since short little legs and tired little eyes grow weary quite easily these days, and add to it the fact that we never made the trek to get the ‘good stuff,’ we opted for a small little sparkler and fireworks display in the safety and comfort of our backyard this year.
Just before heading indoors as the sky took on the dark of night, we made good on one more tradition, catching a jar full of fireflies. Nature’s nightlight for my girl’s room.
It was positively a sweet holiday. And coming up in just two months is one of our favorite holidays at the Blue house, the birthday of our lil’ mama, Aliyah. And though it’s not quite recognized as a national holiday, it sure beats the rest in our book. So, let the party planning begin, because, really what better reason to celebrate than that of precious life.
Enjoy the frosting. Bon appetit!

Love all the pictures. That sparkler one turned out pretty cool with it focusing on your hand. 🙂 And as always you know how to write. SERIOUSLY! I thought I was reading a short story there. 🙂

Our girl’s Big 5 Birthday is coming up this month (July 27). I hope your sweet girl’s birthday is a blast!
A side note on the mastitis. I had mastitis and yeast infections in both breasts with Avery. Cabbage leaves worked WONDERS!!! I would put a cabbage leaf in each of my bra cups for about 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes 12 hours later (no longer than that or your milk could dry up). It was the most amazing thing!!! I hope you feel better soon 🙂
