If you saw my Inspiration Board for my kids’ new room, you know that the focal piece is the pallet bed… something I’ve been wanting to make for awhile now and was thrilled about a month ago when I stumbled upon this heap of pallets, and ended up getting my entire haul for FREE!

As we were sifting through the piles of pallets to find some that were in good shape, we also found a couple of large pallet boxes and decided to use them for Aliyah’s bed to add a little height and dimension to the entire project…. though we’d still have to figure out exactly how to get them home and how to make a bed out of it.

It always helps to have a few guys around for the heavy lifting part.

After unloading our score into the garage came the real work. Thanks to my amazing husband, we had these bad boys cleaned up, sanded down and ready to be installed in one afternoon.

First, we measured the size of the mattresses (twin) that we are using and Chris cut down the width of the two pallets by about a foot. Since we wanted to be able to move these easily, when and if the urge came for me to rearrange the room, we decided to keep the pallets separate instead of making each bed one unit. We picked up eight of these post finials to use as feet for the pallet bed and installed them into the four bottom corners so that they could stand alone.

For the large pallet boxes, after sanding them down, we picked up a large piece of plywood from Home Depot and had them cut it to size for us. For this bed, we did screw the plywood top into the pallets to give it a little durability.

Finally, we just topped with mattresses and bedding!

Voila! Pallet beds.

Cost of beds:
Pallets – FREE
Feet (rail post finials) – $28
Plywood – $20
Tools and screws we had. Because we sold the kids’ old beds on Craigslist, we were able to purchase Brayden’s new twin size mattress, some sheets and pillows and a few other items of the room with that money.

Total cost = $48

Besides the sanding, it was much easier than I had imagined. What projects are you working on right now? I’d love to hear!
