After all, there’s nothing like a bed with the best bedding that envelops you in comfort.
35% of Americans don’t get the recommended 7 hours of sleep each night. And with six children I understand how that can happen. It’s important to get the most quality from the time we do get in bed as there are direct links between sleep and health, depression, and obesity.
It’s funny, because I recently polled my Instagram community to see what everyone misses MOST when away from home, and the winner (by a landslide!) was “my own bed.” While I’m the same way, I crave the comfort of my own cozy space, I also have been lucky enough to stay in a few choice hotels that know how to make a bed right with the best bedding imaginable.
Ever since I’ve been on the hunt for that perfect combination of the best bedding items, and recently we decided to really make it happen. I found all the best bedding I needed to create my own dream bed at Belk.

How to Use the Best Bedding to Make a Comfortable Hotel Like Bed
1. Ultra Comfortable Mattress
The first step is kind of a given. Of course, you need a mattress. But if you’re in the market, make sure you’ve got the right kind of support and choose an ultra-comfortable mattress. These investment pieces, such as memory foam and latex mattresses, are getting easier to come by and at a lower price tag for truly long-lasting support.
It’s important to test out mattresses and find the right one for you.
Speaking of being in the market, your mattress should be replaced approximately every 8 years, and yes, the age of a mattress does have a direct link to the quality of sleep you get on it. When it comes to how to make a bed like a hotel, the mattress you choose can give you a 5-star experience or a motel backache.
2. Luxurious Mattress Pad
Next, take your nighttime sleep from just so-so to being wrapped in a cloud night, after night. Believe me, you won’t want to go back to regular sleep again.
Whether you like a firm or soft mattress, a mattress pad just adds that extra layer of comfort on top while not really messing with your support system. A good pad also protects your mattress from spills and keeps it clean and free of sweat, dust, and all the other things you don’t want lurking there.
Have you ever had to move an old mattress? A mattress can double in weight by the end of its usefulness due to shed skin cells and dust mite accumulation.
Yuck!
3. Extra Lightweight Pillows
Let your pillows create an exceptional hug that will lull you to sleep. With just the right amount of fill, the right pillow cradles your head and neck in comfort.
I feel like pillows, just like a mattress, can be an extremely personal thing… some like them firm and some need softer support, so make sure to find the one that is JUST RIGHT for you.
I like to use inexpensive pillows to fill sham covers and then truly invest in one great supportive pillow that I’ll use nightly.
These pillows are great for easily, and inexpensively, filling those sham sets.
4. Airy & Breathable Sheet Set
Your sheets are what touch your skin, and you’ll want to find some that provide both comfort and style. I like a crisp cotton sheet and style-wise—I go for white.
When it comes to how to make a bed like a hotel a crisp white base is what works. White sheets are the primary choice of luxury hotels since they are easiest to clean and show guests that the bed is fresh.
The higher the thread count the higher the quality of the sheets. Quality sheets are more comfortable and last longer which saves you money in the long run.
Find the right sheet set for you and you’ll want to snooze your alarm, over and over.
We chose this Goodness & Grace cotton sheet set, and I’ve been really happy with it!
5. Down Comforter
Add in a comforter that works in all seasons and gives warmth without weight. Once again this is where quality can make a difference. Don’t be afraid to touch, squeeze, and test out floor models to find a feel that works best for you.
We went with this down alternative comforter in a lighter warmth for Florida to use for all seasons.
6. Soft & Lightweight Duvet Cover
Once you’ve found the perfect comforter, a soft and cozy duvet cover offers year-round comfort, and you can even switch out based on moods, colors and seasons.
Neutral tones without patterns are how to make a bed like a hotel. This allows the largest piece of furniture in your room to emote calmness with clean lines.
If you aren’t a Duvet person it’s okay to purchase a comforter set like the beautiful Goodness & Grace comforter line at Belk.
Making your bed every day will give the illusion that you have your life in order and can make your room look cleaner even when there may be areas that need attention. Plus, pulling the sheets back each night as you slide in gives you that luxury hotel feel.
We went with this duvet cover for our down comforter, but I couldn’t resist the added color and texture and added this gray Goodness & Grace set.
7. Layers Like a Hotel Bed
Add the layers like a super soft blanket and decorative pillows. Keep these extra essential layers handy for chilly nights or extra cuddles. Plus, adding in layers of texture and color makes for a great style statement too.
Think about your favorite hotel experiences and how to make a bed like a hotel. They layer multiple pillows on your bed for a luxury look and add that pop of color with an accent pillow or two. Using accent pillows on the neutral comforter set is an easy way to switch your look with changing trends or personal taste.
I’m loving these chunky knit blankets and different textured pillows, like hand knit and waffle weave, help in building the final look of your dream bed.
