For most of motherhood, as in life, you can choose to make the moments, instead of letting the moments make you. Because really, most of life is lived or celebrated, from peak to peak… with life in between. Through the messes and the piles of laundry, through the tears; wiped from both our own eyes and others, and through the bits of chaos along the way we can choose to make the moments.
And then, after a time of walking through the valley comes that peak… the picture perfect moment when it all comes together in a beautiful canvas for all to see and celebrate. The times that leave an imprint on our memories and hearts. The instant that you really do want to remember, the moments you want to share.
For mothers, we all have the peak moments that so gloriously wrap up all the feels of being a mother, and yet there aren’t words to accurately describe it. In short, it’s what makes us just feel right, like it’s the place we were born to be. A celebration of motherhood.
The moment when your babe’s eyes come alight at the sight of you, knowing that YOU and you alone are just perfectly what they need, what they desire. The moment they wake and only want to cuddle, (mine are usually still sleepily groggy in their HALO Sleepsack) but wanting nothing but you close. The moment your child takes your face in their hands and without prompt declares their love. The moment you sit in the background and proudly watch the person they are becoming flourish beautifully. Life is made up of so many peaks, and many times it’s the low of the valleys that remind us how amazing these peaks really are. Motherhood is no different.
I’ll be honest, I’ve been trudging through quite a bit of the in between lately, not really feeling like I’m winning in any area. Many times, normal times, I even love the in between… it’s slow rhythm that I can tend to crave. The desire to be tucked away, safe inside the walls of my home, feeling important to the little band of people that love me. But lately? Life’s been busier than normal, it’s been crazy… and our cozy oasis is a bit of a mess, one I can’t quite keep up with. For me, this is the equivalent of a D on a report card (and believe me, I was the one that cried over anything other than an A). But then one of these peak moments happen. A bright eyed morning smile. A touch. A belly laugh that just won’t quit. It’s one of those moments that draw me in, reminding me of “THIS. This is what’s important,” while the rest just fades away.
You see, in motherhood, as in life, YOU are enough. I am enough. Sometimes there are demands that call upon the deepest parts of us, that use our sleep reserves and everything else we have. Yes, there are days that we call in reinforcements or need a time away. But for what is really important, you have what it takes. Your life is made for you, and you were made for it. We get the chance to CHOOSE to make moments out of every situation, instead of letting life around us shape who we are.
