Today I am talking about something that’s heavy on my heart right now. We just went through a major hurricane and while my family and I are okay, I am struck right now by the contrast between the devastation we’re surrounded by and the gratitude I have for our safety.
And in the face of all of this, life keeps going – schools are open, work needs to be done – so how do we balance it all in the face of overwhelm?
Today I’ll be sharing some insights and tips on how we can move forward with grace, even when it feels like life is pulling us in hundreds of different directions.
In this episode, I discuss:
- The power of acknowledging your feelings and giving yourself permission to be human. We are conditioned to always have to be strong, but allowing yourself time to process what you’ve been through and take a pause is okay and can be extremely powerful.
- The importance of getting clear on what your priorities are and unpeeling the layers of your to-do list to find what is essential for you right now. In doing this, you can focus your energy on those things only, reducing your mental load and finding more ease in challenging times.
- Another thing to remember when navigating overwhelming times is that we are meant to lean on others. It’s so easy to feel isolated when times are tough, but the power of community can be beautiful and your loved ones want to help, so it’s important to be brave enough to ask for it when it’s needed. .
- On the flip side, being able to help others can also be healing and provide a sense of connection and fulfilment, so lean on that community and become that community for someone else too.
- A third thing that can help at times of overwhelm is to prioritize rest and joy, and this doesn’t have to mean a day of doing nothing (because for many of us, that isn’t possible!) But taking small, meaningful breaks with intention and being present with what brings you joy can be hugely restorative. You can listen to Ep 24 I’m Burnt Out! The Power Of Taking Intentional Break here.
- And finally, when times feel tough, lean into gratitude. Gratitude doesn’t cancel out the difficulty of the situation or erase the struggles, but it can help bring more balance by reminding us that even amidst the storm, there are still things worth appreciating. I also delve into some studies and research backing up just how powerful the practice of gratitude can be for our brains and our bodies.
So as we move through this season, through the rebuilding and the aftermath of the storm, remember to give yourself grace.
Being a radiant woman doesn’t mean shining brightly and outwardly at all times – sometimes it just means holding your light close until you’re ready to shine out again.
