Before the big weekend, where littles would be dressed up and strutting their stuff down the runway for Aliyah’s Fifth birthday… which I’ll write more on later, I took my girl for a little pampering in the swivel chair of a real salon. Not the kind with carnival animal seats and sunshine yellow walls. The kind where the white ceramic shampoo bowl brings a sleep inviting head massage and they have to stack cushions on the recliner so my little one’s head will reach. The kind where good music plays in the background and you’re offered a choice of something to sip, where conversations revolve around who’s doing what and that episode of Real Housewives last night… not favorite sucker colors.
And my talkative, outgoing girl? She didn’t say a word, the ENTIRE TIME. She’d nod her head in answer to a question. She’d shy smile at me whenever I asked how she liked it. But words… those elusive sounds never crossed her pursed lips while she was in that chair.
In the car however, on the way home, came the waterfall that had been welling up for the forty-five minutes she remained silent. A waterfall beginning with My hair is like magic! It’s almost black when it’s wet and almost blonde when it’s dry!
In other words, she liked it.
I walked in the salon that morning with strict instructions to not let the stylist cut her hair short, because she’s trying to grow it out and to record video of it so she can see it and show her friends.
I did, and also snapped a few photos in between…
She’s growing up.
