If you’ve been feeling stuck in life lately, then it is time to take action, my friend! Today’s episode is about the power of taking messy, imperfect action in the face of uncertainty, fear and anxiety, and the many benefits that this can bring.

In this episode, I discuss:
- Although our feelings are real, they are not facts and therefore if you let your feelings dictate your choices, you may end up choosing the most “comfortable” option, keeping you within your comfort zone and preventing you from finding true passion, joy and purpose.
- “Choose your hard” – consciously choose your habits, choices and routines, because by always choosing short-term ease or comfort, we are potentially just trading in a short-term momentary ‘hard’ for a different ‘hard’ further down the line. For example, if you consistently take the ‘easy’ option of choosing the fast, non-nutritious food, you’re trading in little ‘hard’ moments for longer-term bad consequences for your health and wellbeing.
- When things are feeling tough, that is the moment to take action – even if it is messy, imperfect and hard! The first action you take won’t necessarily be the right one and yes, you may fail at first, but failure in itself doesn’t have to be a bad thing. In fact, it’s the perfect opportunity to grow.
- The philosopher Seneca is credited with saying “luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity”, meaning that hard work or action can create the conditions for what we call ‘luck’ to flourish.’ It therefore follows that when you feel like you’re having a streak of bad luck, it may actually be caused by inaction or a lack of preparation.
- One benefit to taking imperfect action is that we experience growth through taking action. By diving into messy action, you gain firsthand experience and insights of what works and what doesn’t, and this paves the way for growth.
- Another benefit to taking imperfect action is that it helps to build confidence and skill, as lived experience is the foundation of the development of both. Think about when you see a child learning to crawl or walk, it’s through taking action, trying, failing, and continually pushing themselves that they master the skill and gain confidence in their ability.
- A third benefit of taking messy, imperfect action when you feel stuck is that it creates clarity. It is often only by doing that you can really see what aligns with your goals and what doesn’t, and where to focus your energy.
- Another benefit of taking action is that it fosters creativity – when we allow ourselves to embrace imperfection, this fuels creativity and leads to a wealth of ideas and breakthrough moments.
And this is what I want for you! I want to see your feelings for what they are, know that they are not necessarily the truth of the matter, and take action even if it feels scary or it feels like you’re not quite ready. Embrace all of the benefits that come with taking messy, imperfect action on your way to success.
