When searching for our new home, one thing I pretty much knew I would change would be the flooring, especially after touring most homes that were a mismatch of tile and other flooring choices.
I’ve always loved the look and feel of wood floors – the warmth, the texture. And while there are SO many options these days for flooring, for our busy home and rambunctious kids, I wanted a surface that would weather and grow with us (and that wouldn’t break every object that fell on it… like tile!)
And really, if you know me, are you surprised I chose gray wood flooring throughout our home?
Looking back through the before photos, I’m so grateful for the design and color choices we made. We swapped out the multiple surface styles, textures
We try to contain our kids’ messes to certain areas of the home which have more forgiving materials, and thankfully we ran our gray wood flooring throughout our main living spaces AND our bedrooms. Typically shoes and jackets are confined to a drop area in the entryway. And food and drinks (ideally) stay in the kitchen. We do play with sand, paints, playdough, food and more but just try and be careful to contain the mess. Though spills and messes happen often in our house!
Something that was important to me though, was just HOW to take care of our pretty gray wood flooring. I’ve mentioned it before, but as I think about what we use for cleaning in our home, I want it to be easy, simple and even something that the kids can do (and most times, they WANT to, so of

We definitely are a house that lives a lot of life on our floors, with four kids (and twins on the way), plus two kittens – we ALWAYS have something happening on our gray wood floors. And though I feel like I might ALREADY be nesting and have been cleaning out rooms and space wherever I can… I don’t want to spend all of our time cleaning, but rather spend it enjoying even life’s messiest, smudge-inducing moments.
