If there ever was a quintessential childhood favorite, it’s playdough, and this homemade playdough recipe with essential oils for calming is such a great way to bring both aromatherapy and motor skills into the mix for a relaxing playtime activity!
Add in your favorite seasonal-specific cookie cutters, food coloring and “extras” and you can make it perfect for any occasion. Use glitter for a princess playdough, or brown food coloring and lots of plastic insects for a fossil experience.
I love using our OWN Fresh Mommy blend (available online at Spark Naturals!) for our homemade playdough, because it’s made with a blend of 100% pure essential oils that gently relieve stress and give a happy, calming boost, including Ylang Ylang, Vanilla, Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Jasmine and more. You could also use any of those essential oils on their own for a calming, relaxing effect.
Since we’re currently in the month of love, we added in varying shades of red food coloring to make degrees of pink homemade playdough and added in heart-shaped cookie cutters. Though it’s great for Easter with a bunny-shaped one as well!
A little tip about adding in the food coloring when making your own homemade playdough; put the playdough into a zip-top bag, add the drops of coloring, seal, and massage until the color is mixed through. It avoids stained hands and extra messes.
