If there ever was a quintessential childhood favorite, it’s playdough, and this homemade playdough recipe with essential oils for calming is such a great way to bring both aromatherapy and motor skills into the mix for a relaxing playtime activity!
Add in your favorite seasonal-specific cookie cutters, food coloring, and “extras” and you can make it perfect for any occasion. Use glitter for princess playdough, or brown food coloring and lots of plastic insects for a fossil experience.
Since we’re currently in the month of love, we added in varying shades of red food coloring to make degrees of pink homemade playdough and added in heart-shaped cookie cutters. Though it’s great for Easter with a bunny-shaped one as well!
A little tip about adding in the food coloring when making your own homemade playdough; put the playdough into a zip-top bag, add the drops of coloring, seal, and massage until the color is mixed through. It avoids stained hands and extra messes.
The Best Homemade Playdough Recipe with
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup salt
- 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 2 cups cold water
- A few drops of calming essential oils (I like using our Fresh Mommy Blend!)
- Food coloring of choice
Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar, oil, and water in a medium saucepan. Stir over medium heat for about 5 minutes, until it reaches playdough consistency. Let cool, split into balls (depending on how many colors you want to have), and knead in essential oils! Place each ball in a zip-top airtight bag and add in coloring, seal, and massage until the color is mixed through. Store in the same airtight bag or another airtight container.
