Shark Week Ideas.
With all the water-loving and swimming happening in our family on a regular basis, it’s no wonder we’ve got a few shark fans… and this week? It’s about as festive as playoff week and we celebrate like we would our team’s winning tournament.
It’s called Shark Week.
For me, growing up, it wasn’t sharks. In fact, it was something quite calm and safe. Boring even, yet for me, it wasn’t. I collected coins and spent hours pouring through books to try and determine the value (you know, before google existed). Each new treasure was precious and carefully wrapped in plastic cases I’d saved my own money for.
For my boys, coins just mean money… but there is something that gets them excited.
A new pair of sandals are “cool” when there’s a shark silhouette across the bottom. A store full of treasures and the promise of one souvenir leaves us with a shark tooth excavation project. A choice of gummy candy results in shark gummies.
I get the fascination. I understand the excitement. Except for the times I don’t. And while I may not feel the same obsession over the same subjects (although I don’t quite feel it about coins anymore either), their passion for sharks has me intrigued.
So what do we do when our kids are passionate about something? We find ways to fuel the fire.
We buy the shark tooth excavation project. We make an extra stop at the beach to search for washed-up shark tooth treasures. We celebrate the sandals, or the tank top, or the sweatshirt donning the watery profile. We spend more time in the pool and play pretend. We let our kids’ diatribes educate us in all things shark. And we find ways to enjoy and learn about the subject together.
Like Shark Week.
We integrate some Shark Week ideas into our summer. In fact, we settle wrangle into our favorite shark hoodie with popcorn and shark gummies to tune in.
