Do you ever feel like the deck is stacked against you? Or like you’ve hit some kind of glass ceiling and you aren’t sure how to get past it. You are not alone. Whether you’re facing professional roadblocks, personal challenges or just need an extra little push to overcome whatever hurdles you’re facing right now, this is the episode for you.
Today I am joined by Orieta Barbetta, a trailblazer in her own right and an inspiring woman, mother and communications professional who looks to inspire others through her own personal journey of overcoming obstacles and turning them into a springboard for success. As a first-generation immigrant, arriving to America not even speaking the language, Orieta figured out not just how to survive but how to truly thrive.
In this episode, Orieta shares her story of how she ended up carving out her dream life despite the various challenges she experienced along the way, and we’ll be exploring the many life lessons she learnt in this journey of triumphing over adversity and breaking through those seemingly insurmountable barriers.
This episode is jam-packed with goodness so I hope you enjoy listening to my conversation with Orieta as much as I loved having it!
In this episode, we explore:
- Orieta’s story from being a first-generation immigrant from Venezuela arriving in America, not able to speak the language, to rising up the ranks to a top position in a large male-dominated industry, proving that dreams can thrive even in the face of challenges.
- The importance of allowing yourself to pivot on your journey (even if you are later in life!) embracing these changes of direction, and doing it despite the fear you may feel around it. Fear is inevitable and shouldn’t be taken as a sign to not take action, and if you believe you can do it, then you will.
- Embracing “failure” as a valuable learning experience, and how the act of doing this can help dispel the fears around it that may be stopping you from taking action.
- The power in knowing that sometimes things are just a momentary state of mind, and that often there needs to be temporary discomfort or hardship in order to break through to greater things and reap even more benefits. Much like a cold plunge, if you are able to withstand short-term discomfort, you’ll reap so many benefits in the long-run.
- Being comfortable with being uncomfortable, and reframing this to see it as an opportunity of growth.
- Imposter syndrome, how prevalent it is, and how speaking to others around you who love you and can reflect your abilities and worth back to you can be powerful.
- Burnout, and how this is often more around the ‘thinking’ and the mental load, rather than the actual ‘doing’. Take the busy life of a mom for example, it’s often the mental load of everything you have to do, rather than the actual doing of those tasks, which can cause burnout and overwhelm.
- The importance of making time for yourself and treating yourself with compassion, as a way to prevent falling victim to burnout, and of responding to yourself with the same grace that you would extend to others.
- The power of being vulnerable and being your true authentic self, and how this will ultimately mean people will become your allies and supporters, empowering you to strive forward towards your dreams, even in the face of challenges.
