Did you know you can make your own antibiotic cream with natural ingredients? It’s actually pretty simple to whip up a batch of homemade healing salve and be ready for cuts and scrapes with your own natural alternative to Neosporin!
Around our house, cuts, scrapes, bug bites and boo boos are just par for the course, and in some cases, like this week, the number seems to have skyrocketed. I blame the summer-like weather, but since it’s been giving us more sunny beach and pool time as well, I’m okay with it. Instead of reaching for petroleum based and store bought products, I’ve been happily making over our home medicine cabinet with essential oils and our own salves and remedies. Thankfully I had some of our healing salve on hand this week for the plethora of bites and scrapes on my littles.
Table of Contents
Ultimate Homemade Healing Salve:
1/2 cup coconut oil
1 tablespoon almond oil or grapeseed oil(optional)
2 tablespoons of beeswax
10 drops Melaleuca Oil
10 drops Lavender Oil
8 drops Lemon Oil
1/2 tablespoon witch hazel
Melt down the first three ingredients in double boiler, a glass bowl over a pot of water or even in the microwave (easy is always great right?!). Mix in essential oils and witch hazel, pour into a glass jar or container of choice and allow to cool.
That’s all there is too it, and a little goes a long way.
This Ultimate Homemade Healing Salve is so effective because of the natural anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties in each of the ingredients…
Coconut oil is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral and promotes healing as it moisturizes the skin.
Almond oil reduces inflammation and reduces redness.
Witch Hazel is a natural astringent that helps clean and disinfect the area, and helps to reduce any bruising or swelling.
Beezewax is anti-bacterial and helps to heal, protect and seal the skin without clogging pores.
Melaleuca Essential Oil is antibacterial, anti-viral, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.
Lavender Essential Oil is an analgesic which helps to ease pain.
Lemon Essential Oil is an antiseptic, anti-viral, anti-fungal and an astringent.
To make it even EASIER to whip up a batch of this or any other salve you’d like to have on hand–and what I like to do now–is start with a Base Salve and just add in essential oils. This has become my go-to starting base since it’s SO simple to use, no measuring required.
It seems like once you take that leap and make something like this for yourself and for the health of your family–and then consequently realize how easy it actually is–it’s an encouragement to do even more! Starting with a great foundation–by using the first three ingredients above or something like this Spark Naturals Base Salve–you can use your favorite oils or a wide range of combinations to create and build what you need. And the great thing about salves is that the base ingredients work as a diluting or carrier oil, so the salve can be applied directly to the skin without an extra dilution step. The base oils also work as skin moisturizers and keep the essential oils on the skin while they do their magic.
I do have to say though, I was happy to hear the the essential oil company I like to use, Spark Naturals, was bringing out their own line of 100% organic custom crafted salves, along with the Base Salve I was already using, perfect for those times we want something ready-made and such a great addition to any home natural medicine cabinet. We’ve been using them for the past week, and I think I’ve especially fallen in love with the Dream Sleep Salve (hello great sleep!). And the Defense Protective Salve has made it so easy to give a daily boost to our immune systems (like I would with oils), without having to worry about diluting to the right concentration for my littles, since it was already done for me!
We’ve put together a couple of fabulous giveaways for you… so let me tell you about these salves!
Dream – Sleep:
If you are having a tough time sleeping, you will love this salve. It helps stabilize your blood sugars, which in turn will help you to sleep better, deeper and more rested! (And it so works!)
Defense – Protective:
This time of the year all of our immune systems can use a little added Defense! Defense contains a boosted version of Shield Blend, which I like to apply daily as a preventative on my family. If you are trying to keep germs at bay or help boost your immune system, this is the salve for you.
Focus – Concentration:
This salve is designed to help with concentration, meditation, stress and overall mood, perfect to help you through that project or for the kids before heading off to school.
Revive – Vapor Rub:
This is a 100% natural vapor rub designed to help with cold and flu symptoms. Applied on chest and throat, it temporarily relieves cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation associated with the common cold. Apply on muscles and joints to temporarily relieve minor aches and pains.
Base Salve:
This is a great way to make and mix your own products. Packaged in a glass jar, it’s easy to heat and add your own oils. The Base Salve is crafted with 100% Pure Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, Organic Beeswax, Extra Virgin Organic Olive Oil & Vitamin E (another great skin healing ingredient).
Ready to try your own? We’re giving away a full set of these four custom crafted Salve blends mentioned in this post both on Facebook AND one set on Instagram (Click over to enter those giveaways too!), PLUS we’re giving away a Base Foundation Salve right here!Spark Naturals Base Salve Giveaway!

I love the idea of making and using naturals salves! I have a few in my cabinets but honestly I need to get in the habit of reaching for them first! Anything lavender will do the trick for me!

Love having lavender on hand as well… use it for almost everything!!! 🙂

I will have to make this! I have everything except for the lavender, this is a good excuse to order some!
In this house it’s me more than the kids that constantly seems to be scratching or bruising myself. 🙂
Tabitha Blue says
With three little ones, you’d think I’d use it on them all the time… but I’m the same way, needing myself about as much as them!! 🙂
Corked Inc. says
This sounds like a great alternative to things like Neosporin! I’ll definitely have to check it out!
Donna Tharge says
Do you have a recipe for immunity salve, you can apply in nose? Or what oils would be good for this purpose that I can put in my naked salve?
Tabitha Blue says
Hi Donna! If you have an immune boosting blend like Shield oil, that’s a great one to use. Otherwise, you can make your own mix and add any of these oils into a base salve for an immune booster: Clove, Ravintsara, Lemon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary. We like to get our oils from SparkNaturals.com and you can use code FRESHMOMMY for 10% off your order too!

If I were to use an oil like Thieves to make a immune boosting shield salve, how many drops would I add to the base salve?
