It took vision. Seeing past dated paint colors, a wall of mirrors, popcorn ceiling and mismatched flooring, this ultimate living room has been completely transformed to a cozy and comfortable open family living space with bold statement pieces like our Article sofa, neutral colors and touches of sleek mid century and Scandinavian inspired design. It was a shell of a room, but I fell in love with it anyway.
On our very first walk-through, the windows drew me in. Isn’t it funny how the very thing that let’s me look outside is what captivated my attention to the inside of this home? I loved the windows, the shell, the bones of the home.
After purchasing our house and getting into the fun of demo, basically the walls and windows remain… everything else has been fair game. And with that said, even the walls have had an update.
The first thing we removed from this space was a full wall of mirrors. We knocked down the popcorn ceiling, painted the ceiling and walls and replaced lighting and fans. Then it was time for the floors… and even the kiddos helped rip up the old stuff. No, it wasn’t child labor, but as we work on the house, they are always asking for projects to help with – tearing things apart is a great option! With our new, neutral shell of a space, it was time to style it.
The living room is the heart of every home, and especially in our newly opened up floor plan and with four kiddos, it’s where life happens. The heartbeat. And I needed a room to hold up to our busy little rhythm.
With such a neutral space, I spent a great deal of time looking for a statement piece that would pop, feel comfortable, look great and last well in a household of littles. In my search, I’ve been drooling over the Sven Article sofa for awhile now (okay, drooling over just about everything they offer!), and turns out; it’s perfect for families.
Paired with an oversized natural ottoman from Article, we’ve got a space that is totally functional for a family full of energy, free of sharp edges, and the ultimate comfortable place to relax and play together.
Overall, I kept our updated color scheme throughout the house to a serene, neutral palette with whites, creams, grays and blacks. Natural and textural elements like wood, brass and the gorgeous brown leather of our Article sofa are great grounding elements that blend with the open concept.
I totally get the fear of buying furniture online (although that is just about the only way I shop these days, with four kids… it’s just easier!). Article understands the trepidation though, and they’ve reinvented the entire furniture experience to make it easier on your mind and your wallet.
By cutting out the middle-man, you can find gorgeous designs for a lower cost that strolling through a design center, and the big plus, delivery is a flat rate of just $49 (even for couches, like what?!)
And if you are REALLY worried about how much you’ll like it, you even get 30 days to test it out and return or exchange if it doesn’t fit with your style with their money-back guarantee. Seriously, they’re taking the worry out of online shopping!
Are you ready for our living room makeover BEFORE AND AFTER?!

That’s a great couch. I like the low profile. So many pieces of furniture are the oversized style, and I prefer this kind. Your kitten hasn’t scratched it up? That’s my only concern as a cat mom 🙂
Tabitha Blue says
Thankfully no scratches!!!! We keep his nails short though too. 🙂
