Why We Love Making Traditions
The beauty of crafting family Christmas traditions lies in creating magic that carries on each year. Each cherished tradition becomes a thread in the fabric of our shared experiences. These yearly activities anchor us, providing comfort and joy as we come together year after year. I personally love that they create a magical backdrop to our holiday seasons. The simple act of embracing and perpetuating these traditions becomes a testament to the warmth that comes with celebrating the holidays together. These traditions don’t have to be anything extravagant. It’s all about finding the things that your family enjoys doing together and making it a point to make time to do those things.
Some of Our Favorite Family At Home Holiday Traditions
- Holiday Movie Marathon: Create a cozy movie night at home by compiling a list of your family’s favorite holiday films. Make some popcorn, gather blankets and pillows, and enjoy a movie marathon together. Check Out Our Blogpost on setting up an Indoor Movie Night!
- DIY Ornament Decorating: Turn your home into a festive workshop by organizing a DIY ornament decorating session. Purchase plain ornaments or gather materials like paint, glitter, and ribbons to personalize and create unique decorations. This not only provides a creative outlet for everyone but also results in handmade ornaments that hold sentimental value.
- Baking Extravaganza: Get into the holiday spirit by baking a variety of festive treats together. From sugar cookies to gingerbread houses, the kitchen can be a hub of delicious activity. Allow each family member to contribute their favorite recipe or try something new as you bond over the joy of baking and, of course, indulging in the tasty results.
- Indoor Treasure Hunt: Transform your home into a holiday-themed treasure trove by organizing an indoor treasure hunt. Create clues that lead from one room to another, with each clue eventually leading to a hidden holiday-themed surprise or treat. This activity not only adds an element of excitement but also encourages teamwork and problem-solving skills as family members work together to solve the clues.
- Holiday Book Reading: Settle in for a cozy evening of storytelling by having a holiday book reading time. Choose a mix of classic and new holiday-themed books suitable for various age groups within the family. Take turns reading out loud, and perhaps even incorporate some festive snacks and hot cocoa. This activity is perfect for creating a warm and intimate atmosphere while instilling a love for literature and storytelling in the younger members of the family. - Matching Holiday Pajamas: We used to open Christmas pajamas on Christmas Eve, but switched it up a couple of years ago, because we wanted to be able to enjoy them for the whole month of December! So now, we open holiday jammies on December 1st, along with the first book of our advent countdown. We didn’t leave out Christmas Eve though, our six kids always draw names at the beginning of the month for a “secret Santa” exchange that happens on December 24th. It’s fun to watch them take their time and figure out what to surprise each other with! Ahhhh, this season is so much fun!!!!
