Yea, it’s fall, and if you’re like me, you are ready to scent your home with delicious fall diffuser blends. But also, if you’re like me, you have littles running around and want to make sure the essential oils you use are safe for kids.
I get it. The good news is you don’t have to give up on the fall diffuser blends that bring you joy even though you are rocking the mom life.
I have used essential oils around my children for years. Wow, now it’s been well over a decade. And without any incident.
I have six children in all, but I’m currently operating with twin toddler boys. Despite having the pitter-patter of little feet, I still feel comfortable using essential oil around (and even on) my children.

Safe Essential Oils for Kids
Essential oils are thought of as natural, which is the basic reason I like to use them. But the crucial thing to remember is that they are still a chemical, though naturally derived.
When it comes to the essential oils safe for kids, it’s important to consider:
- chemical composition and purity
- dosage
- duration of use
- method of use
Whether a specific oil is safe for your child depends on several factors, including their:
- age
- medication and supplement use
- underlying health conditions
Some oils are considered safe for topical use with children, and others warrant more caution or nonuse. But using essential oils in fall diffuser blends is the safest delivery method for most children.
When diffusing essential oil, it is very diluted—more than it would be in topical use.
While diffusing oils (especially around children), use these safety precautions:
- Follow proper dilution guidelines.
- Make sure you diffuse in a large space or well-ventilated area.
- Diffuse intermittently, typically 30 to 60 minutes on, then 30 to 60 minutes off. But generally, it is recommended never to exceed 60 minutes with children.
List of Safe Essential Oils for Kids
This is a list of popular essential oils that are known to be safe to diffuse around children or pets without risk:
- spearmint
- grapefruit
- lemon
- cedarwood
- tangerine
- fir
- lavender
Other essential oils may have the potential to be irritants to children. So, use more caution when diffusing these oils and keep an eye on your children for reactions:
- thyme
- clove bud or leaf
- bay
- lemongrass
- peppermint
- cinnamon bark or leaf
With that said, I do use these essential oils from the second list in my diffuser at home. Over the years, I have become comfortable with how to use them. But if you have an infant, I would not recommend using these oils near Baby as their skin is delicate and their organs underdeveloped.
The Real Danger of Essential Oils to Children
The real danger of essential oils to children is poisoning. Some oils can cause toxicity or burns through topical exposure. But the most common form of poisoning is through accidental consumption.
“The exposures we see are almost all in children and almost all accidental because essential oils aren’t always stored properly,” Dr. Bowman said, “they need to be kept up and out of the reach of children.”
It is critical to safely store your essential oils up and away from the reach of small children. According to WebMD, the following oils are the most toxic to small children if consumed:
- clove
- tea tree
- lavender
- wintergreen oils
- camphor
- thyme
- eucalyptus
Although the effects of essential oil poisoning can be severe, I hope this encourages you versus discourages your use of essential oils. As long as you store your essential oils safely, the general use (and especially diffusing of essential oils) with kids is considered pretty safe.
As always, consult with a doctor if you have any questions or concerns.
