A patriotic flag snack tray that will impress your guests and get you in an Americana mood while you feel good about what you’re serving with these healthier options! Surprise your Independence Day Party guests (especially the little ones!) and show your patriotic side while happily filling bellies.
Summer break means more time at home (well, except for this little #BlueSummerTour road trip we’re on), and for us that means more snacks. Both for our road trip and home life snacks just seem to reign supreme. Tell me I’m not the only one… the only mama who hears “I’m hungry” just about all day long while food is on a constant flow from the kitchen. In all honesty, our summer schedule kind of goes like this, snack time, breakfast snack, snack, another snack, a nibbling of lunch, snack, holding them off from snacks until dinner, dinner time, after dinner snack. So, for now, I’ve learned to embrace it! There are definitely times that I’ll off on any kind of snacks or nibbles when a meal is in sight, but otherwise, for summer, snacks are a go!
What does this mean for me? Stocking up on lots of snacks that I’m okay with them eating all day long, meaning an abundance of fruits and simple veggies, organic cheeses, Horizon Organic fruit snacks, and more! In fact, we just actually moved into our new home (that is still under renovation) and juuuust installed the shelves in our pantry (we had a few days of our food in laundry baskets and THAT was not easy to keep organized) and I’ve got a bin of snacks on a lower shelf that the kids can reach. Even my littlest just-turned-one-year-old who now can now walk circles around me knows right where the snacks are and will go in and grab them herself. Yikes!
Overall, I have peace of mind about it all and like to encourage their own freedom and independence. They each come with their own personality, perspective and individual tastes and I like to encourage the differences in them, the fun and the weird, without bringing weird ingredients into the picture. And the cool part? When we’ve got a pantry full of healthy snacks, it’s not hard to whip up a fun and festive snack we can be proud of, like this patriotic flag snack tray, when we’ve got a shindig on the books. (Side note: do people still even use the word shindig? It just passed through my mind while typing and I have no idea where it came from.)
Recently we had a little Americana get-together and as a sort of appetizer/side dish I put out a “flag” of snacks. It was a hit, especially with the little ones at the table! And though I’m sure it needs very little explanation, if any, here’s the lowdown on how: starting with a cake plate (a small white tray or large flat plate would work great as well), I made stripes of red and white. For the red I used Horizon Organic Fruit Snacks and red berries. For the white stripes I used yogurt covered raisins and Horizon Organic Cheddar Cheese stars, and of course, topped it all off with a bowl of blueberries. Simple and easy to create, simple and easy to understand ingredients, and a plate full of fun for our little guests to enjoy (though myself and a few other adults dipped in as well).
What are your favorite snacks to have on hand for you and your kids?! I’m always looking for new ways to switch up our stash and would love to hear!
