5 Tips For Creating an Incredible Outdoor (Small) Front Door Space
As the leaves begin to change colors and fall from the trees, it’s time to think about decorating your outdoor space. Here are five things you can do to create an incredible outdoor space for your front door and porch this fall:
- Invest in a few well-made pieces that can be used year-round – or stored for use year after year. I’ve slowly built up my collection, and I have a tote of faux pumpkins and decor that will give our porch a cozy feel throughout the entire season.
- Add some colorful potted plants – Place pots on the ground around your other decor and furniture or hang them from hooks on a lattice fence or railing.
- Spread out rugs – And add a rug mat. A rug mat makes your porch so much cozier and provides protection against water and dirt tracked onto the flooring by shoes.
- Think about lighting. Hang strings of twinkling lights, or mix these up with lanterns for a more festive look.
- And if you’re not feeling crafty but want to show off some of those beautiful fall leaves, why not grab a handful of leaf clippings from your lawn? I have to be honest, we don’t have fall leaves on the ground here yet, so I clipped a few of the faux fall decor leaves from a stem I had and tossed those on the ground!

Fall Wreaths
A great way to add a fall touch to your porch or front door is by decorating with a wreath. We found quite a few lovely and affordable options that will be sure to add just the right amount of festive flair. I happen to love wreaths made from more natural materials like pampas grass or wheat (which could be used over again during multiple seasons… like Easter!), but you can also find some great options at your local craft store or grocery store — sometimes I’ve found that route to be quite a bit more expensive though.
Fall Garlands
One of my favorite ways to decorate the porch this fall is by adorning it with a festive garland. It’s a simple, yet beautiful way to make the porch stand out and really get into the spirit of the season. They’re also a nice way to add some color and interest without going overboard. Plus, there are so many different types to choose from, so you can easily find one that matches your personal taste. If you’re looking for some ideas for your porch then these ones below might be perfect!
Lanterns
I love the idea of adding a few lanterns to the porch for a touch of romance and ambiance. The best part about these is that they are multi-functional. You can add decor, candles or even battery-operated lights! We’ve had ours for a few years and just rotate where we place them around the house.
Faux Florals That Last
If you’re looking for an easy and inexpensive way to decorate your porch, consider faux plants. Even if you’re not a green thumb, these beauties will last all year long without the need for watering or sunlight. They also help bring some much-needed color into the cold winter months.
I added these faux florals this year and was pleasantly surprised by the quality! If you have any doubts about their durability, check out this Amazon reviewer’s experience: People ask me what kind of flowers are they! They look like real flowers, I put them in a pot and put them in foam. Then I put dirt on top. Love them! – Karen H.
Fall Doormat
A doormat is a great way to start decorating your porch. You can find them at any department store or home goods store. They come in all different colors and shapes, so it’s easy to find one that matches your style and budget. If you’re looking for something more personalized, you can also make your own doormat! You can find free patterns online, or buy a pre-made mat and paint it yourself.
Final Touches For Small Porch Fall Decorating Ideas!
I made sure to use a couple of risers to add height and dimension, especially since our front door is off-centered and we’re using the majority of our decor on one side of the entryway. And like I mentioned, we added some faux leaves to the entryway as well for an added punch of color and fall feels.
