10 Items / 20 Outfits
I’m so excited that winter is here! Even though it’s not my favorite season because I tend to get cold easily, it’s one of the times of the year when I really love fashion because it gives me an excuse to dress in layers, cozy sweaters, and lots of boots. Plus, this season provides so many fashion opportunities with the holidays coming up, so I thought I’d share some of my tips on building a stylish winter capsule wardrobe to hopefully give you some fashion inspiration.
I don’t know about you but when I wake up in the morning and head into my closet, there are a select number of clothing items that I always find myself drawn to. These are the few items I own that I feel my best in. The feeling of “best” can take on a number of descriptors – that of comfortable, powerful, and/or sexy. These pieces are my go-to items and are kept in constant rotation, getting the most wear.
How To Build A Winter Capsule Wardrobe:
If you’re planning on buying less, your head is probably spinning with questions about how to build a winter capsule wardrobe. Don’t worry! This guide will walk you through every aspect of building your ideal winter wardrobe. Read on to learn more.
Ask Yourself Why?
If I’m drawn to only a select number of items in my closet, I have to ask myself, why am I keeping all of the others? Why am I giving up precious closet space to items that I really don’t need?
After having this small personal revelation about excess, I found myself inspired to try my hand at a modified version of the current capsule wardrobe trend. Seeing people really minimize their closets to just a selection of key items looked like a fun challenge to me, and one that I was excited to take on.
First things first, I went into my wardrobe and began purging it of all the items I rarely wore, separating all of my pieces into three piles: keep, donate, and toss.
Take Inventory
Once I completed the task of purging, I happily got to taking inventory and organizing the items that I had selected to keep. Taking inventory of your items is an important step because the capsule wardrobe is usually only around 25-35 items. This is including shoes, coats, purses, accessories, etc.
Going through your picks after the purge gives you an idea of what key items you need to go out and invest in if there are any. The most important part of that sentence is “key.”
Tips On What To Include In Your Winter Capsule
When it comes to capsule wardrobes, you need to make sure you are picking items that can be worn with almost every other item in your closet. It makes the shopping process a little more intense but also keeps you from splurging on items you might not really need.
Include pieces that complement each other well and also represent who you are as an individual.
The best way to build your wardrobe for winter is to first think about styles that flatter your body type. From there, choose pieces that can be worn throughout multiple seasons.
Style Examples For Women
I thought a fun way to show this in action was to give you a few styled examples of how I would use a selection of 10 of my keep items in 20 different outfits (side note: I live in Florida so it isn’t all that cold, but if you live somewhere cooler adding a nice pair of thick tights to the skirts and dress outfits would be a great way to stay warm.)
I encourage you to try this “dress up” exercise yourself, choose 10 or so items from your current wardrobe and play around with mixing and matching them. You might be surprised with how much fun it is to get creative with your clothing, and at the end of it all, you’ve got a whole new arsenal of outfits to take on the town.

Great tips. I’m now trying to create a wardrobe like this for spring. I have one woolen cardigan, I think it will be perfect for many of my spring outfits.
