Mom always says breakfast is the most important meal of the day. When you are camping, this is never truer. We love fueling up with a delicious steak and eggs breakfast.
You probably already realize that steak is an outstanding source of protein, but when you combine it with eggs, it becomes a protein powerhouse. A high-protein steak and eggs breakfast not only fuels your morning but can decrease your cravings for sugar and carbs throughout the rest of your day.
Even better, research has revealed that a steak and egg breakfast may help you lose and maintain a healthy weight better than other breakfast options. Think keto. By now, you likely know that a high protein, low carb diet can be helpful to burn fat for many body types.
So, we wanted to share this super simple steak and eggs breakfast for a delicious campfire meal all of your campers will love.
Camping Is at an All-Time High
The number of first-time campers increased significantly in 2020 and as we continue into 2021, experts predict that camping will continue to be at an all-time high. Research shows that families with children are the group most likely to continue camping in 2021. 70% of family campers say they plan to spend more nights camping and 64% plan on taking more trips overall.
We did our fair share of camping this summer too. The result is some excellent need-to-know camping tips on the blog.
With that said, I wanted to share some yummy and easy campfire meals that we found to be real winners with our kids. And this steak and eggs breakfast was one of the best.
It’s a great start to our day and helps the littles avoid asking for “second breakfast” within minutes of beginning our adventure for the day.
To cook steak and eggs over the fire, follow these steps:
Step 1) Build your fire
Choosing a place to start your fire is very important. First, choose a place that is away from high grass or brush because you don’t want any embers or sparks from your fire escaping. Second, check with local authorities before starting your fire if there are any rules pertaining to open fires in your area. After getting approval from local authorities it is time to build your fire.
You’ll be ready in about 20 minutes or so. If you want perfectly cooked steaks, use an instant-read thermometer: 135 ̊F is medium rare; 140 ̊F is medium; 145 ̊F+ is well done.
Step 2) Sear the steak
In order to get that nice, crispy crust on your steak, you’ll want it as dry as possible. Season both sides of your steak liberally with salt. Then, take a dry paper towel or two and pat down your steaks until they are as dry as possible—this will give you an extra-crispy crust when cooked over fire. Make sure you pat off any liquid from your steaks before cooking them over open flame.
Step 3) Add vegetables
Vegetables are easy to prepare over an open fire; set aside enough time, though, because vegetables take longer than meat. Good veggies for camping include carrots, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, tomatoes (if it’s warm enough), corn on the cob (again, if it’s warm enough), green beans or anything that can be cooked quickly. If you plan on adding vegetables to your meal at camp, pack them in containers so they stay fresh until you’re ready to cook them.
For our steak and eggs breakfast, I love tomatoes on the vine!
Step 4) Add eggs to your cast iron skillet
If you’re going to cook over an open fire, it only makes sense that you use an old-fashioned cast iron skillet. Not only is it incredibly durable, but also the cast iron will absorb heat from your fire—making it even hotter—and distribute it evenly across its surface. I was a little worried about adding the eggs, as I didn’t want them to stick, but with a good seasoned pan you don’t have to worry about that. Plus, you’re cooking your eggs in the delicious steak and tomato seasoning. Add a few eggs to your skillet once your steak and vegetables are almost ready, and they’ll quickly begin cooking in their own fat.
Steak and Eggs Breakfast Supplies:
- 2 steaks of choice
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 4 eggs
- 6-8 vine tomatoes
- Steak seasoning (we use Omaha Steaks steak seasoning)
- salt and pepper
Steak and Eggs Breakfast Recipe:
- Season both sides of the steak with salt and pepper (to taste) and seasoning.
- Add butter to a hot cast-iron skillet.
- Add the tomatoes and the steak to cook, turning the steak once, until well browned. (About 7 minutes on the first side, and 4 minutes on the second side, for medium-rare.)
- Hold the steak with tongs and sear the edges. (Remember, depending on the thickness of the steak, it will take more or less time.)
- When the steak is almost ready, crack the eggs into the pan and let them cook to the desired consistency (Over-easy is our family fave!)
- Remove the steaks from the pan and plate with the tomatoes and eggs. Let the steak rest for a few minutes before serving.
Optional: While the steak is resting, I like to butter bread and cook it in the skillet to toast. It’s a great addition to a steak and eggs breakfast…but it’s not keto-friendly.
