We love our fried state fair food in the south, and a personal family favorite is funnel cake. So, as usual, I wanted to find a way to DIY this family favorite snack food at home. I found a super simple way to make yummy pancake mix funnel cake at home.
It’s SO easy.
It’s always fun to see what new fried foods they come up with at the Florida State Fair. Funnel cakes are no exception with the new savory Flaming Hot Cheetos Funnel Cake and the double-decker Orange Glaze Funnel Cake with orange cream frosting, orange glaze whip cream, topped with orange candies.
The options are pretty much endless, and you could create so many flavor combos and fun toppings – or even a buffet style toppings bar.
I have to say though, I’m always a fan of the original. Simple, flavorful and topped with powdered sugar.

Easy Funnel Cake From Pancake Mix
When I was looking for an easy way to make funnel cakes, I was super excited to find out you can make funnel cake from pancake mix at home. I always have a box of Krusteaz Buttermilk Pancake Mix in our pantry.
We love Krusteaz pancake mix because the pancakes come out light and fluffy every time – and all I have to do is add water. So, I reached for our trusty mix to give this recipe a try, and it works perfectly!
And on top of working perfectly, the taste is SO good. Brayden couldn’t stop commenting that it tastes just like at the fair, or better!
Making funnel cake from pancake mix couldn’t get any easier than this two-ingredient recipe. And if you are worried about frying the funnel cakes, which is easier than it seems, I recommend getting a deep-fry thermometer.

Ingredients for Funnel Cake From Pancake Mix:
2 cups Krusteaz buttermilk pancake mix
1+ cup water
Funnel Cake From Pancake Mix Instructions:
- Pre-heat about 1″ of oil in a heavy pot or cast iron skillet to 360 degrees.
- Mix the Krusteaz buttermilk pancake mix with 1 cup water. Add up to 1/2 cup water as needed to get a consistency that flows but is not runny.
- Put your simple funnel cake batter into a squirt bottle or use a plastic sandwich bag with the corner cut off.
- Squirt batter into hot oil in a squiggly circle.
- Cooke for 2 minutes, flipping once.
- Remove to a wire rack over wax paper to cool.
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar (or other toppings of your choice) and enjoy!

I have to say I’m a sweet tooth girl, and if you’ve been around for awhile you know I love my donuts and cinnamon buns. So, when it comes to funnel cake topping ideas, I tend to favor the sweet ones.
